The origin of the name Carr

Carr is an ancient Northern English and Scottish Border surname of Anglo-Norse origin, derived from the Old Norse kjarr, referring to a family residing near a prominent marsh, wetland, or overgrown brushwood meadow. Taking deep root along the Anglo-Scottish Border in Northumberland, Roxburghshire, and Yorkshire, the Carrs became a formidable Border Reiver clan holding powerful strongholds at Ford Castle and Cessford. The name was recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Yorkshire (John de la Ker).

The symbolism of the Carr coat of arms

Distinctive and dignified, the Carr coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad argent / silver or white chevron set between three argent / silver or white six-pointed stars (mullets). In heraldry, the deep blue shield represents loyalty, truth, and devotion, while the argent / silver or white chevron symbolises architectural fortitude and protection. The three six-pointed stars denote noble ambition, light, and divine guidance. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays blue and white feather plumes. Below, the motto scroll displays Fida clavo, translating to "Faithful to the helm." Catalogued in Stodart's Scottish Arms and Burke's General Armory.
