Eminently suited for a proper brew! Whether it’s a gift to mark a milestone birthday, a new home, or Christmas morning — here’s an artwork with history in your hands.

The origin of the name Cardenas

Cardenas (Cárdenas) is a historic Spanish noble surname originating from the manorial town of Cárdenas in the province of La Rioja, Spain. Derived from the Spanish word cárdeno (meaning dark, bluish, or blackberry-colored), the name was first recorded during the 10th century when the noble knight Lope Díaz de Haro, Señor de Vizcaya, granted the lands of Cárdenas to his descendants. The family played monumental roles in the Reconquista and royal governance across Spain and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Cardenas coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Cardenas coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with two black wolves walking (passant) in vertical alignment. In heraldry, the gold shield symbolises nobility, generosity, and high standing, while the black wolves represent fierce watchfulness, martial valour, and unyielding endurance under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays black and gold feather plumes. Documented in the Nobiliario General de España and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.

Historical figures

Lázaro Cárdenas (1895–1970): Celebrated Mexican general and statesman who served as President of Mexico from 1934 to 1940.
García López de Cárdenas (16th Century): Spanish conquistador and explorer noted for being the first European to discover the Grand Canyon.
Félix Cárdenas (b. 1973): Professional Colombian road racing cyclist and two-time stage winner in the Vuelta a España.
