The origin of the name Campos

Campos is an ancient Spanish and Portuguese topographic surname derived from the Latin campi, meaning "fields" or "open country." Originally assumed by families residing near expansive agricultural plains or manorial fields, the lineage established early noble seats in the kingdoms of Castile, León, Galicia, and Portugal during the Middle Ages. Codified in early Iberian armorial registers and feudal land grants, the surname expanded throughout Spain, Portugal, and the Americas.

The symbolism of the Campos coat of arms

Visually striking, the Campos coat of arms features a radiant gold shield with a red curved division issuing from the base, charged with a golden lion rampant. In chief, the gold background displays two deep blue crescents. In classical heraldry, the gold sections symbolise generosity and elevation of mind, while the red division denotes valour and military fortitude. The golden lion rampant is a supreme emblem of courage and leadership, while the blue crescents signify enlightenment and hope. Positioned above a traditional steel helmet, the crest displays gold and red feather plumes. Catalogued in the Nobiliario Español and J.B. Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
