Symbolism of the Campbell Crest
The quartered arms of the Campbell crest originated with Colin Campbell, the 1st Earl of Argyll, following his marriage to Isabel Stewart, co-heiress of the Lord of Lorne. This union, along with a subsequent land swap with her uncle, led to Colin Campbell’s official creation as Lord Lorne by King James III of Scotland in 1470. To represent his dual status as head of the Campbells and Lord of Lorne, he combined the two historic shields into the quartered design you see on this pint glass.
The Campbell family arms are distinguished by their black and gold 'gyronny' pattern, a heraldic design uniquely associated with Clan Campbell. In Scottish heraldry, the gyronny of eight serves as the emblem of the Chief of Clan Campbell (MacCailein Mòr), acting as a visual signature akin to a modern logo that sets the clan’s arms apart. The earliest known example of this design appears on a 1296 wax seal belonging to Sir Colin Campbell (Cailean Mòr or "Colin the Great"), the clan's historic progenitor and source of the traditional chief’s title.
In heraldry, gold symbolizes honour, generosity, and high status, while black represents constancy and determination. The ships depicted refer to a fleet at Lorne, symbolizing maritime strength and the clan’s influence across Scotland’s western seaways. The boar’s head alludes to the legend of Diarmuid O'Duine, a Campbell ancestor who was fatally wounded by a magical boar’s poisonous bristle. The clan motto, Ne Obliviscaris, translates to “Forget Not,” encapsulating the spirit and heritage of Clan Campbell.
Origin of the Campbell name
The surname Campbell is of Scottish origin, derived from the Gaelic cam beul, commonly interpreted as “crooked mouth” or “wry-mouthed.” The Campbell family emerged prominently in Argyll during the 13th century, with the earliest ancestor recorded as Gilleasbaig (Gillespie) of Menstrie in the 1260s. Clan Campbell’s influence grew significantly from the 13th to the 16th centuries, particularly in Argyll and the western Highlands. Over time, the family became one of Scotland’s most powerful clans, closely linked with the Lordship of Loch Awe and the Dukes of Argyll. Due to the widespread adoption of the surname across Scotland and beyond, various branches and societies display differing heraldic forms.
