The origin of the name Callaghan

Callaghan (O'Callaghan) is a historic Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Ceallacháin, stemming from the personal name Ceallach, meaning "strife," "contention," or "bright-headed." The sept descended from Ceallachán, a celebrated 10th-century King of Munster. Originally holding extensive royal territories in County Cork along the River Blackwater (Clann Ceallacháin), the family maintained strong Gaelic chieftainships before expanding throughout Munster and Leinster. Recorded in the Annals of the Four Masters and the 1659 Census of Ireland.
