The origin of the name Caldwell
Caldwell is an ancient English and Scottish locational surname derived from the Old English cald-wielle, meaning "cold spring" or "cold stream." The name took root independently across various manorial estates, most notably near Caldwell in Ayrshire and Renfrewshire, Scotland, as well as locations in Yorkshire and Northern England. Codified in early administrative charters, the name appears in the 1296 Ragman Rolls of Scotland (William de Caldwell) and 14th-century Scottish land charters.
The symbolism of the Caldwell coat of arms
Visually dynamic, the Caldwell coat of arms features a black shield charged with three gold piles (pointed wedges), each topped with a blue and argent / silver or white heraldic fountain (roundel of water), set above a base of green and red wavy bars. In heraldry, the black shield denotes wisdom and constancy, while the gold piles and heraldic fountains represent clear flowing waters and natural abundance. Positioned above the shield, the crest features an armored arm emerging from a castle tower, holding a sword aloft. Below, the motto scroll displays Fac et spera, translating to "Do and hope." Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Caldwell of Renfrewshire and Staffordshire.
