The origin of the name Calderon

Calderon (Calderón) is a historic Spanish surname derived from the word caldero (cauldron or kettle), carrying both occupational and noble feudal roots. Historically, the right to display cauldrons on a shield was granted by Spanish monarchs to Ricos Hombres (grandees) who possessed the wealth and land to feed an army of troops under their personal banner. Originating in Castile and Cantabria, the Calderón lineage established prominent seats across Spain and Latin America, recorded in early medieval Spanish armorials.

The symbolism of the Calderon coat of arms

Rich in feudal distinction, the Calderon coat of arms displays a gold shield charged with five black cauldrons, each bearing a small red flag. The shield is enclosed by a broad red border (bordure) charged with eight gold saltire crosses. In heraldry, the gold inner shield and cauldrons denote noble hospitality, abundance, and high military command. The red border and gold saltires symbolise valour, fortitude, and unwavering faith under trial. Documented in the Nobiliario General de España and Rietstap’s Armorial Général.
