The origin of the name Byrne
Byrne is one of Ireland's most famous Gaelic surnames, derived from Ó Broin, meaning "descendant of Bran" (from bran, meaning raven). Originally holding vast royal territories in Kildare, the O'Byrne clan was driven into the Wicklow Mountains following the Anglo-Norman invasion, where they established impregnable strongholds at Glenmalure and became formidable Gaelic chiefs. Recorded extensively in the Annals of the Four Masters and the 1659 Census of Ireland, the Byrnes played a central role in medieval Irish history.
The symbolism of the Byrne coat of arms
Set upon a vibrant red shield, the Byrne coat of arms features a broad chevron in argent / silver or white set between three upright argent / silver or white open right hands. In classical heraldry, the red shield represents heroic fortitude and valour, while the argent / silver or white chevron denotes structural strength and protection. The three open hands symbolise sincerity, unblemished faith, and open-hearted trust. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a sea-mermaid holding a golden mirror and comb, an emblem of eloquence and vigilance. Below, the motto scroll displays Certavi et vici, translating to "I have fought and conquered." Catalogued in MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
