The Byrne family traces its roots to Bran mac Máelmórda, a King of Leinster from the 11th century. Following the Norman invasion, the Ó Broin sept was displaced from their ancestral lands in Kildare and resettled in the Wicklow Mountains, where they became one of the most influential Gaelic families in the area. The name has since become synonymous with resistance, independence, and endurance. Over the centuries, the surname has appeared in anglicized variations such as O’Byrne and Byrne.
