The origin of the name Butler

Butler is a historic Anglo-Norman occupational and titular surname derived from the Old French botiler (from Latin butticula, bottle), referring to the chief cup-bearer or manorial officer in charge of a noble household's wines. Following the 1169 Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland, Theobald FitzWalter was appointed Chief Butler of Ireland by King Henry II. His descendants adopted Butler as their hereditary surname, founding the mighty House of Ormonde in Kilkenny Castle and becoming one of the most celebrated dynasties in Irish and British history.

The symbolism of the Butler coat of arms

Regal and historic, the Butler coat of arms features a quarterly shield: the first and fourth quarters display a deep blue field with an indented golden upper section (chief indented), while the second and third quarters feature a red field charged with three golden covered cups. In heraldry, the covered cups directly represent the hereditary royal office of Chief Butler of Ireland, while the indented gold and blue sections symbolise noble service, truth, and royal favor. Positioned atop a steel helmet, the crest features a silver and blue bird standing with spread wings. Below, the motto scroll displays the French phrase Comme je trouve, translating to "As I find."
