The origin of the name Bush

Bush is an ancient English and Germanic topographic surname derived from the Old English busc or Middle High German busch, identifying a family residing near a prominent thicket, grove, or manorial wood. It also arose as a locational surname for families from places like Bush in Cornwall or various manorial hamlets. Codified across England following the Norman Conquest, the surname established early seats in Yorkshire, Gloucestershire, and Kent, appearing in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Norfolk (John atte Busshe).

The symbolism of the Bush coat of arms

Visually balanced, the Bush coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a broad black horizontal band (fess) bearing a golden fleur-de-lis set between two golden eagles displayed. Above the black band sit two black boars standing, with a third black boar in base. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield denotes peace and sincerity, while the black band represents dignity and resolve. The boars symbolise fierce bravery and hospitality, the golden eagles represent magnanimity and elevated vision, and the fleur-de-lis denotes chivalric honour. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a standing silver wild goat (ibex). Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Bush of Kent and Gloucestershire.
