The origin of the name Burton

Burton is an ancient English locational surname derived from any of the numerous settlements named Burton across Britain (from the Old English burh-tun, meaning a fortified manor, enclosure, or town). Established across Yorkshire, Staffordshire, Leicestershire, and Lincolnshire following the 1066 Norman Conquest, families holding these manorial estates adopted the surname throughout the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The name appears in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Lincolnshire (Geoffrey de Burton).

The symbolism of the Burton coat of arms

Dignified and protective, the Burton coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad gold horizontal band (fess) set between three gold dogs' (talbots') heads erased. In classical heraldry, the deep blue shield denotes truth and loyalty, while the gold horizontal band symbolises a knightly belt of military honour and command. The three gold talbot dogs' heads represent unyielding loyalty, keen watchfulness, and courage. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a green oak tree with golden acorns. Below, the motto scroll displays Lux vitae, translating to "Light of life." Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Burton of Lindley and Staverton.
