The origin of the name Burns

Burns is an ancient Scottish and Northern English topographic and Gaelic surname. Topographically, it derives from the Middle English burna (Old English burne), referring to a family residing beside a prominent brook or stream. In Scotland and Ireland, it also serves as an Anglicised form of the Gaelic Ó Bearáin. Deeply established across Ayrshire, Dumfriesshire, and Cumberland, the family held influential seats throughout the Lowlands and Borders, appearing in early administrative charters from the 13th century onward.

The symbolism of the Burns coat of arms

Elegantly balanced, the Burns coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with a blue chevron bearing three argent / silver or white fleurs-de-lis, set between two black spur-rowels (mullets) in chief and a black hunting horn in base. The argent / silver or white shield denotes peace and sincerity, while the blue chevron represents loyalty and truth. The fleurs-de-lis signify chivalric honour, the spur-rowels denote knightly service, and the hunting horn represents vigilance and readiness.
