The origin of the name Burke
Burke is one of Ireland's most famous and powerful Anglo-Norman surnames, derived from de Burgh (originating from the village of Burgh in Suffolk, England). Arriving in Ireland during the 1169 Anglo-Norman invasion under William de Burgh, the family established vast feudal lordships across Connacht (County Galway and County Mayo) and Munster (County Tipperary). Fully integrating into Irish Gaelic society, they became Earls of Clanricarde and Earls of Mayo, giving rise to the Gaelic title Bourke or de Búrca.
The symbolism of the Burke coat of arms
Commanding and ancient, the Burke coat of arms displays a gold shield charged with a bold red cross, featuring a black lion rampant in the top-left quarter (dexter chief). In heraldry, the gold shield symbolises generosity and elevation of mind, while the red cross represents unyielding faith, military fortitude, and chivalry. The black lion rampant in chief is an emblem of royal courage and supreme leadership. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a seated spotted leopard (or cat-a-mountain), collared and chained in gold. Below, the motto scroll proudly displays the Norman French phrase Ung Roy, Ung Foy, Ung Loy, translating to "One King, One Faith, One Law." Documented in MacLysaght’s Irish Families and Burke's General Armory.
