The origin of the name Buckley
Buckley is a historic surname with dual English locational and Gaelic Irish origins. In England, it derives from the Old English bucc-leah, meaning "beech-tree meadow" or "buck meadow," associated with Buckley in Lancashire and Greater Manchester. In Ireland, it serves as the Anglicised form of Ó Buachalla, derived from buachaill (meaning youth or herd). The surname took deep root across North West England and County Cork in Munster, recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Yorkshire and medieval Irish land surveys.
The symbolism of the Buckley coat of arms
Visually striking and dignified, the Buckley coat of arms features a black shield charged with a broad chevron in argent / silver or white set between three argent / silver or white bulls' heads caboshed (facing forward). In classical heraldry, the black shield denotes wisdom, constancy, and dignity, while the argent / silver or white chevron represents structural fortitude and protection. The three bulls' heads symbolise heroic valour, determination, and unyielding strength in defense of the family. Positioned above the shield, the crest features an argent / silver or white bull's head. Below, the motto scroll displays Nec temere nec timide, translating to "Neither rashly nor timidly." Catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Buckley of Lancashire and Saddleworth.
