About the Buchanan surname and coat of arms

The origins of Clan Buchanan trace back to Anselan O Kyan of the Irish Ó Catháin clan, a king of north Ulster based in Limavady, County Down. Legend holds that he arrived in Argyll, Scotland, in 1016 and was rewarded by King Malcolm II with the lands known as Buth Chanain (meaning Chanain's base) near Loch Lomond for his valor against the Danes. Over time, Chanain was anglicized to Canon, giving rise to the Buchanan surname.

The Buchanan coat of arms, featuring a black lion, was officially recorded in the Scots Roll of 1455. In heraldry, the lion symbolizes bravery, strength, and courage, often representing nobility and leadership and signifying protection over clan members. In 1675, John Buchanan registered the coat of arms with double lines around the lion, highlighting the clan's royal connection through marriage to Isobel Stewart. The 1675 arms also incorporate the Chief's crest: a hand clutching a ducal cap, commemorating Sir Alexander Buchanan's notable slaying of the Duke of Clarence in combat.
