About the Buchanan surname and coat of arms

Clan Buchanan traces its origins to Anselan O Kyan of the Irish Ó Catháin clan, a king of north Ulster based in Limavady, County Down. He is said to have arrived in Argyll, Scotland, in 1016 and, for his service against the Danes, was granted the lands known as Buth Chanain (meaning Chanain's base) near Loch Lomond by King Malcolm II. Subsequently Chanain became anglised to Canon, hence the emergence of the surname Buchanan.

The Buchanan coat of arms with a black lion was recorded in the Scots Roll of 1455. The lion in heraldry typically symbolizes bravery, strength, and courage – often used to symbolise nobility and leadership, and to infer protection of clan members. In 1675, John Buchanan registered it with double lines around the lion to represent the clan's link to the Scottish royal family through marriage to Isobel Stewart. The 1675 arms also feature the Chief's crest – a hand holding a ducal cap, which celebrates Sir Alexander Buchanan's slaying of the Duke of Clarence in combat.
