The origin of the name Brydges

Brydges is an ancient English topographic surname derived from the Middle English brigge (Old English brycg), identifying a family that lived near or maintained a prominent manorial or river bridge. Serving as critical transport links and defense points in medieval England, bridge-keepers held essential civic positions across Gloucestershire, Kent, and Essex. The Brydges family rose to immense national nobility in England, holding the title Dukes of Chandos and Barons Chandos of Sudeley Castle.

The symbolism of the Brydges coat of arms

Set upon a vibrant red shield, the Brydges coat of arms features a broad chevron in argent / silver or white set between three argent / silver or white eagle or griffin heads erased. In classical heraldry, the red shield represents martial courage and fortitude, while the argent / silver or white chevron symbolises architectural strength and protection. The eagle or griffin heads denote swift vision, high intelligence, and noble watchfulness. Positioned above the shield, the crest features an argent / silver or white triple-towered castle topped with spread golden wings. Below, the motto scroll displays Je garderay, translating to "I will guard." This armorial layout is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Brydges, Duke of Chandos.
