The origin of the name Bryant
Bryant is a historic Anglo-Norman and Celtic personal and family name derived from the Old Breton or Celtic Bryan, meaning "high," "noble," or "strong." Introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest by Breton followers of William the Conqueror, the surname established powerful family seats across Devon, Somerset, Wiltshire, and Ireland. Early administrative entries include the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Bryan de Braint) and the 1327 Subsidy Rolls of Somerset.
The symbolism of the Bryant coat of arms
Commanding and spiritual, the Bryant coat of arms features a deep blue shield charged with a broad golden cross. At the center of the cross sits a red five-petaled rose, flanked on the cross arms by four red lozenges (diamonds). In heraldry, the deep blue shield represents truth, loyalty, and devotion, while the golden cross symbolises faith and noble purpose. The central red rose denotes joy, grace, and chivalry, while the red lozenges signify wisdom and constancy under trial. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a saltire flag flying from a flagpole. This armorial layout is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Bryant of Devon and Somerset.
