The surname Browne has its origins in Old French, typically referring to someone with brown hair or complexion. Originating from the Counts of Marche in Pictou, in Normandy, this name was first recorded in Ireland, following the early period of Norman settlement during the twelfth century. Sir William le Brun (The grandson of Sir Hugh le Brun, one of the Lords of the Marches from Wales) took part in the 1172 Norman Invasion of Ireland. His son, Fromond le Brun, was in 1230 appointed Chancellor of Ireland.

The Brownes became a prominent family in counties like Galway and Mayo, where they were part of the Gaelic-Irish landscape. Over time, they adapted their name to suit the Irish language and culture, with the "e" distinguishing them in Ireland from the simpler "Brown" used in England.
