The origin of the name Bridge

Bridge is an ancient English topographic surname derived from the Middle English brigge (Old English brycg), identifying one who lived near or maintained a prominent manorial or river bridge. Serving as critical transport links and defense points in medieval England, bridge-keepers held essential civic positions across Gloucestershire, Kent, and Somerset. The surname was recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire (Nicholas de la Brygge).

The symbolism of the Bridge coat of arms

Set upon a vibrant red shield, the Bridge coat of arms features a broad chevron in argent / silver or white set between three argent / silver or white eagle or griffin heads erased. In classical heraldry, the red shield represents martial courage and fortitude, while the argent / silver or white chevron symbolises architectural strength and protection. The eagle or griffin heads denote swift vision, high intelligence, and noble watchfulness. Positioned above the shield, the crest features a silver triple-towered castle topped with spread golden wings. Below, the motto scroll displays Je garderay, translating to "I will guard." This armorial layout is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Bridge of Gloucestershire and Essex.
