Breslin is a historic Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Breisleáin, stemming from breasal, meaning "strife" or "fighter." Originating in Inishowen, County Donegal, the sept served as hereditary Brehons (judges) to the powerful O'Donnell dynasty before establishing influential seats in County Fermanagh. Renowned as legal scholars, poets, and leaders, the name appears in early medieval annals, the 1659 Census of Ireland, and 17th-century Ulster inquisitions.
