The origin of the name Brennan
Brennan is an ancient Gaelic Irish surname derived from Ó Braonáin, stemming from braon, meaning "sorrow," "tear," or "drop." Originating across Leinster and Connacht, the primary sept held vast ancestral lands in County Kilkenny (Ormond) as Chiefs of Osraige, with major historical branches in Laois, Westmeath, and Sligo. Renowned in medieval Irish history for their fierce independence, the Brennans were recorded in early Gaelic annals including the Annals of the Four Masters and the 1659 Census of Ireland.
The symbolism of the Brennan coat of arms
Set upon a vibrant red shield, the Brennan coat of arms features two golden lions rampant supporting a central golden sheaf of wheat (garb). Above the lions sit two crossed swords surmounted by an upright dagger. In classical heraldry, the red shield denotes heroic fortitude, martial courage, and valour. The golden lions represent noble bravery and strength, while the wheat sheaf symbolises bounty, unity, and hospitality. The crossed swords and dagger signify unyielding readiness in defense of faith and homeland. Below, the motto scroll bears the Latin phrase Sub hoc signo vinces, translating to "Under this sign you will conquer." This armorial layout is catalogued in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families and Burke's General Armory.
