The origin of the name Bradley

Bradley is an ancient English locational surname derived from the Old English brad-leah, meaning "broad meadow" or "wide clearing." The surname took root independently across various manorial estates in West Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, and Gloucestershire, where families held lands named Bradley. Codified in early feudal pipe rolls following the 1066 Norman Conquest, the name appears in the 1180 Pipe Rolls of Hampshire (William de Bradelei) and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire.

The symbolism of the Bradley coat of arms

Elegantly proportioned, the Bradley coat of arms features an argent / silver or white shield charged with an engrailed red horizontal band bearing three golden birds, set between three black crosses patée fitchée. In classical heraldry, the argent / silver or white shield signifies peace, sincerity, and purity, while the red band represents military fortitude and defense. The golden birds symbolise hope and joy, while the black crosses patée fitchée denote steadfast faith and devotion. Positioned above the shield, the crest displays a golden bird holding a small cross in its beak. This armorial layout is documented in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Bradley of Yorkshire and Lancashire.
