The origin of the name Boyd

Boyd is a historic Scottish clan surname of Gaelic and Anglo-Norman origin, derived either from the Gaelic buidhe (meaning yellow or fair-haired) or topographically from the Isle of Bute (Rothesay). The Boyd family held the ancient lordship of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, playing major roles in Scottish royal governance as High Stewards and Earls of Kilmarnock. Codified in early feudal charters, the surname appears in the 1205 administrative records of Paisley Abbey and the 1296 Ragman Rolls of Scotland (Robert de Boyd).
