Bouchard is a renowned French and Norman surname derived from the ancient Germanic personal name Burg-hard, combining burg (fortress or protection) and hard (strong or brave), meaning "strong fortress guard." Originating in Normandy, Anjou, and Île-de-France during the Middle Ages, the noble Bouchard family held prominent feudal lordships (Sires de Bouchard and Counts of Vendôme) before expanding across France and playing a monumental role in the 17th-century settlement of New France (Quebec, Canada).
