The Origin of the Name Blair

The surname Blair derives from the Scottish Gaelic word blàr, meaning a clearing, plain, or battlefield. It is a topographic name originating from ancient baronies across Scotland, most notably the Barony of Blair in Ayrshire. The earliest recorded lineage traces to William de Blair, who held lands in Ayrshire during the reign of King William the Lion in the late 12th century, establishing one of Scotland's oldest landed families.

The Symbolism of the Blair Coat of Arms

The silver shield features a prominent black saltire (St. Andrew's diagonal cross) charged with mascles (voided diamond-shaped armor buckles), symbolizing steadfast faith and chivalric duty. Surrounding the cross are key armorial charges: a gold star (mullet) in chief representing divine direction, two gold crescents in the flanks denoting honor and growth, and a gold garb (sheaf of wheat) in base signifying prosperity and abundance. The crest depicts a stag lodged (resting), representing wisdom, peace, and harmony. The Latin motto, "Amo probos", translates to "I love the virtuous."

• Written & Seal Record: The earliest documented seal displaying the Blair saltire and mascles belongs to Bryce de Blair, attached to the Ragman Roll of 1296. Variations incorporating the star, crescents, and garb appear in early Scottish armorial registries, including the Workman’s Manuscript (c. 1565).
• Physical Carving: Heraldic stone carvings featuring the Blair arms are preserved in the structure of Blair House (Ayrshire), which served as the family seat for over eight centuries, as well as in remnants at Kilwinning Abbey.

Historical Figures

Key historical figures include Sir Bryce de Blair (d. 1296), a prominent Scottish patriot who fought during the Wars of Independence; Robert Blair (1593–1666), influential Covenanter and chaplain to King Charles I; and Robert Blair (1699–1746), celebrated poet and author of The Grave.
