The origin of the name Blair
Blair is an ancient Scottish clan surname derived from the Gaelic blár, meaning a fertile plain, field, or meadow. The family established two primary ancient territorial branches: Blair of Blair in Ayrshire and Blair of Balthayock in Perthshire. Codified in early Scottish royal charters, the surname appears in the 1205 administrative records of King William the Lion and the 1296 Ragman Rolls of Scotland (Stephen de Blare).
The symbolism of the Blair coat of arms
Displayed upon an argent / silver or white shield, the Blair coat of arms is charged with a black saltire cross bearing five argent / silver or white diamond lozenges, accompanied by a gold star in chief, two gold crescents on the sides, and a gold sheaf of wheat in base. The argent / silver or white shield denotes peace and integrity, while the black saltire represents resolve and steadfast faith. The star symbolises guidance, the crescents honour, and the wheat sheaf abundance and hospitality. Positioned above the helm, the crest features a resting stag (hart). Below, the motto scroll displays Amo probos, translating to "I love the virtuous." This layout is registered in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland (Lyon Register) and Burke's General Armory.
