The origin of the name Berry

Berry is an ancient topographic, locational, and Gaelic surname with multi-faceted roots in England, France, and Ireland. Topographically, it derives from the Old English byrig, referring to one who lived near a fortified manor or burgh. Locationally, it traces to the historic French province of Berry, brought to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest. In Ireland, it serves as an Anglicised form of the Gaelic Ó Béara (from County Cork). The name established prominent seats across Devon, Lancashire, and Leinster, recorded in the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Somerset (Alex de Bery).
