The origin of the name Benson

Benson is a historic English patronymic and locational surname meaning "son of Ben" (shortened from Benedict) or originating from the parish of Benson in Oxfordshire (derived from the Old English Bensingtun, meaning the settlement of Bensa's people). Established across Northern England—particularly in Yorkshire, Cumberland, and Lancashire—the family held significant manorial seats throughout the medieval era, documented in early rolls including the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire.

The symbolism of the Benson coat of arms

Displayed upon an argent / silver or white shield, the Benson coat of arms features two red diagonal bands (bends) set with three green clovers (trefoils) in bend. The argent / silver or white background signifies peace, sincerity, and purity of motive, while the red diagonal bands denote military defense and architectural fortitude. The three green clovers symbolise growth, prosperity, and enduring hope. Positioned below the shield, the motto scroll displays the Latin phrase Si Deus quis contra?, translating to "If God be for us, who can be against us?" This armorial framework is documented in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Benson of Baysbrown, Cumberland, and Lord Bingley.
