The origin of the name Bennett

Bennett is a historic Anglo-Norman personal and family name derived from the Latin Benedictus, meaning "blessed." Popularised across Britain and Ireland following the 1066 Norman Conquest through the widespread influence of the Benedictine monastic order, the name evolved into a hereditary surname across England, Wales, and Ireland. Early administrative entries include the 1193 Pipe Rolls of Berkshire (Benedictus) and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Cambridgeshire (Adam Beneyt).

The symbolism of the Bennett coat of arms

Set upon a vibrant red shield, the Bennett coat of arms is charged with three lions rampant in argent / silver or white surrounding a central radiant gold sun in splendour. The red shield represents martial courage, magnanimity, and valour in defense of the realm, while the argent / silver or white lions denote heroic leadership and fortitude. The gold sun in splendour at the centre symbolises glory, illumination, and divine favour. Below the shield, the motto scroll bears the French phrase De bon vouloir servir le roy, translating to "To serve the king with good will." This specific design is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Bennett, Earl of Tankerville.
