The origin of the name Bell

Bell is an ancient English and Scottish surname with both occupational and topographic origins. Derived from the Middle English belle, it originally denoted one who served as a church bell-ringer, bell-founder, or town crier, or a family residing near a prominent town bell tower or inn sign. The name took strong root along the Anglo-Scottish Border, where the Bells became a formidable Border Reiver clan in Dumfriesshire and Northumberland. It was recorded in early administrative rolls including the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Yorkshire (John le Bel) and the 1296 Ragman Rolls of Scotland.
