The origin of the name Belanger

Belanger (Bélanger) is a distinguished French and Norman surname derived from the ancient Germanic personal name Beringar, combining ber (bear) and ger (spear), meaning "bold bear-spear." Originating in Normandy and Picardy during the Middle Ages, the family established feudal estates before playing a monumental role in the 17th-century settlement of New France (Quebec, Canada), where they became prominent seigneurs and civic leaders.

The symbolism of the Belanger coat of arms

Elegantly proportioned, the Belanger coat of arms features a silver shield charged with a central red rose (seeded in gold and barbed in green), surrounded by six red ermine spots. In heraldry, the silver shield denotes sincerity and peace, while the red rose is an emblem of joy, grace, and hope. The red ermine spots represent noble heritage, high judicial honour, and moral integrity. Positioned above the helm, the crest features a noble crown with red and white feather plumes. This armorial layout is documented in French nobility registers and Canadian heraldic archives.
