The origin of the name Begley
Begley is a historic Irish surname derived from the Gaelic Ó Beaglaoich, formed from the elements beag (meaning little) and laoch (meaning hero or warrior). Originating in the ancient territory of Donegal (Tír Chonaill) in Ulster, the Begley clan served as hereditary military commanders and ecclesiastics to the O'Donnell dynasty. Over time, branches of the sept migrated southward, establishing prominent seats in County Cork and County Kerry, as recorded in the 1659 Census of Ireland and 17th-century Fiants.
The symbolism of the Begley coat of arms
Visually balanced and chivalric, the Begley coat of arms features a silver shield charged with a broad red horizontal band (fess) bearing three silver coins (plates), set between three red birds. In heraldry, the silver shield signifies peace and sincerity, while the red band and birds represent martial valour, hope, and swift execution of duty. The silver coins symbolise generosity and trust. Positioned above the helm, the crest features a noble crown with red and silver feather plumes. This armorial framework is catalogued in Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families and Burke's General Armory.
