The origin of the name Beckett
Beckett is a historic English locational and topographic surname derived from the Old English bec-heafod, meaning "head of the stream," or from ancient manorial villages in Berkshire and Devon. The surname achieved immense historical prominence in the 12th century through Saint Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury. Following the Norman Conquest, the lineage established influential seats across Norfolk, Yorkshire, and Ireland, recorded in early medieval administrative rolls including the 1175 Pipe Rolls of Kent and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire.
The symbolism of the Beckett coat of arms
Commanding and noble, the Beckett coat of arms features a per chevron division in gold and red, charged with three lions' heads erased—two red heads on the gold upper field and one gold head on the red lower field. In heraldic art, the gold represents generosity and elevation of mind, while the red signifies martial courage and valour. The lion's head is a revered emblem of heroism and leadership. Positioned atop the helm, the crest features a black raven, symbolising sharp intellect and divine providence. This armorial layout is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Beckett of Leeds and Yorkshire.
