The origin of the name Barry
Barry is a renowned Cambro-Norman and Gaelic surname with deep roots in Wales and Ireland. It derives topographically from the island and parish of Barry in Glamorgan, Wales, as well as the Gaelic Ó Báire. The Norman noble de Barry family played a central role in the 1169 Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland under Strongbow. Settling extensively in County Cork, they built magnificent strongholds at Buttevant and Castlelyons, eventually holding the title Earls of Barrymore and becoming one of the most prominent dynasties in Irish history.
The symbolism of the Barry coat of arms
Commanding and ancient, the Barry coat of arms displays a silver shield charged with three broad red horizontal bars. In classical heraldry, the silver shield signifies sincerity, peace, and unblemished honour, while the red bars denote military command, heroic valour, and strength in battle. Positioned above the helm, the crest features a silver triple-towered castle, out of whose central portal issues a wolf's head. Below the shield, the motto scroll proudly displays the Norman French phrase Boutez en avant, translating to "Push forward." This armorial framework is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) and Edward MacLysaght’s Irish Families.
