The Irish Barrett surname originates from the Norman name “Baret,” introduced during the Norman invasion of Ireland. The family primarily settled in Cork and Mayo/Galway, establishing two influential branches that quickly embraced Irish customs. The name likely derives from the Norman-French word barat (meaning trader) or was originally a nickname for a quarrelsome individual. Although the Barrett family arrived in Ireland in the 1170s, some of the earliest recorded mentions include Wattin Barrett circa 1300 and John Barrett in the early 14th century.

Throughout generations, the Barretts became deeply rooted in Ireland, especially in Connacht and County Mayo, evolving into one of the notable “Old English” families who adopted Irish culture and identity. This cultural blending produced Gaelicised versions of the name, such as Mac Baróid, meaning “son of Baróid,” and the modern Irish form Bairéad.

The Barrett coat of arms is characterised by bold red and white horizontal bars.
