The origin of the name Barrett
Barrett is a historic Anglo-Norman surname introduced to Britain during the 1066 Norman Conquest, derived from the Old French baraud or barat, describing a spirited, energetic warrior or cunning negotiator. Following the Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland in 1169, the Barrett family established powerful feudal baronies in County Cork (Barretts Country) and County Mayo, becoming thoroughly Gaelicised while retaining major ancestral seats in Devon, Essex, and Nottinghamshire in England. The name appears in early feudal charters including the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Norfolk.
The symbolism of the Barrett coat of arms
Visually distinctive, the Barrett shield is split vertically and features ten alternating horizontal bars in silver and red. In heraldic art, the silver bars denote peace, sincerity, and purity of motive, while the red bars represent martial valour, magnanimity, and military fortitude. Positioned above the helm, the crest displays a black demi-lion rampant, crowned in red and silver. Below the shield, the motto scroll bears the Latin phrase Honor Virtus Probitas, translating to "Honor, Virtue, Probity." This armorial layout is officially catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Barrett of Castlemore, County Cork, and Barrett of Belhouse, Essex.
