The Irish Barrett surname originates from the Norman name “Baret,” introduced during the Norman invasion of Ireland. Settling primarily in Cork and Mayo/Galway, the Barrett family established two influential branches that quickly embraced Irish customs and traditions. The name is believed to derive from the Norman-French word barat (meaning trader) or possibly as a nickname for a quarrelsome individual. Although the family arrived in the 1170s, prominent early figures include Wattin Barrett around 1300 and John Barrett in the early 14th century.

Over the centuries, the Barrett family became deeply rooted in Ireland, especially in Connacht and County Mayo. They evolved into one of the notable “Old English” families who adopted Irish customs and identity, which led to Gaelicised versions of the name such as Mac Baróid, meaning “son of Baróid,” and the modern Irish form Bairéad.

The Barrett coat of arms is characterized by bold red and white horizontal stripes, known as bars. The red (gules) symbolizes courage, strength, and a readiness to defend one’s people, while the white or silver (argent) represents peace, sincerity, and honorable intent.
