The origin of the name Barnett

Barnett is an ancient topographic and locational surname of Old English origin, derived from bærnet, meaning land cleared by burning or a place cleared for agriculture. The surname became strongly associated with the historic market town of Chipping Barnet in Hertfordshire, as well as manorial estates across Middlesex, Gloucestershire, and the West Midlands. Codified in official medieval records following the Norman Conquest, the name appears in the 1190 Pipe Rolls of Hertfordshire and the 1273 Hundred Rolls of Buckinghamshire (Richard de Barnet).

The symbolism of the Barnett coat of arms

Commanding and martial, the Barnett coat of arms features a radiant gold shield charged with a broad black saltire cross. At the central intersection of the cross sits a fierce black panther's head facing forward. In heraldry, the gold shield signifies generosity and elevation of mind, while the black saltire represents unyielding resolve, wisdom, and constancy under trial. The central panther's head is an ancient symbol of ferocious courage, swift defense, and vigilant guardianship. Below the shield, the motto scroll displays the Latin phrase Nisi paret imperat, translating to "Unless he obeys, he commands." This specific design is catalogued in Burke's General Armory (1884) for Barnett of Stratfield Saye, Hampshire.
