Origin of the Barker name

Barker is a classic English occupational surname with deep medieval roots. It derives from the Middle English word barkere, meaning a tanner of leather. Tanners used the bark of trees (especially oak) to cure animal hides and produce leather, which was an indispensable material for shoes, armor, saddlery, and clothing in the Middle Ages.

Symbolism of the Barker Coat of Arms

The Barker coat of arms features a striking blue (azure) shield displaying a fierce silver lion rampant, surrounded by an elegant array of golden fleur-de-lis. The lion rampant is a classic emblem of bravery, valor, and strength, while the fleur-de-lis signifies purity and light. The crest features a golden eagle displayed, denoting a person of action. The Latin motto, Fide sed cui vide, offers the wise counsel: “Trust, but be careful whom you trust.”

Historical figures

Sir Christopher Barker served as Garter Principal King of Arms during the reign of King Henry VIII. Robert Barker was the official Royal Printer to King James I, responsible for printing the famous first edition of the King James Bible in 1611.
