Origin of the Ballinger name

The surname Ballinger is of Anglo-French origin, introduced to England following the Norman Conquest of 1066. It is an occupational surname derived from the Old French boulangier or boulanger, meaning a baker of bread. As bread was the absolute staple of the medieval diet, the local baker was a highly respected and essential figure in any community.

Symbolism of the Ballinger Coat of Arms

The Ballinger coat of arms features a silver (argent) shield distinguished by a prominent blue (azure) diagonal band (a bend), which is vividly bordered in red (gules). Centered upon this band is a golden griffin. In heraldic tradition, the griffin—combining the eagle's head and wings with a lion's body—symbolizes vigilance, courage, and a guardian of treasure. The blue and silver palette denotes truth, sincerity, and peace.

Historical figures

Henry Ballinger was an early English Quaker pioneer who emigrated to New Jersey in the late 17th century, establishing a prominent American branch. Sir John Ballinger was a distinguished Welsh librarian and bibliographer who served as the first National Librarian of Wales.
