The Irish Bairéad surname traces its origins to the Norman name “Baret,” brought to Ireland during the Norman invasion of Ireland. Settling primarily in Cork and Mayo/Galway, this family established two influential branches that quickly embraced Irish customs and culture. The surname likely derives from the Norman-French barat (meaning trader) or may have originated as a nickname for a quarrelsome individual. While the Barrett family first arrived in the 1170s, notable early records include Wattin Barrett around 1300 and John Barrett in the early 14th century.

Throughout the centuries, the Barrett family became deeply rooted in Ireland—especially in Connacht and County Mayo—growing into one of the distinguished “Old English” families who fully adopted Irish traditions and identity. This cultural integration led to Gaelicised forms of the name such as Mac Baróid, meaning “son of Baróid,” and the modern Irish form, Bairéad.

The Bairéad / Barrett coat of arms is recognized by its striking red and white horizontal stripes, known as bars. The red (gules) symbolizes courage, strength, and a steadfast readiness to protect one’s kin, while the white or silver (argent) represents peace, sincerity, and honorable intentions. Together, these colors balance power with integrity. The family motto, “Honor, Virtus, Probitas,” translates from Latin as “Honor, Virtue, and Integrity.”
