The origin of the name Ayala

Ayala is an ancient Basque surname of toponymic origin, deriving from the Ayala Valley in the province of Álava, northern Spain. The name stems from the Basque words ai (meaning "slope" or "side") and ala (meaning "pasture"). The Lords of Ayala were among the most powerful noble dynasties of medieval Spain, serving as hereditary High Chancellors of Castile and governors of Basque provinces.

The symbolism of the Ayala coat of arms

The coat of arms displays an argent (silver) field charged with two sable (black) wolves passant in pale, enclosed within a gules (red) border charged with eight or (gold) saltires couped. In heraldry, argent denotes peace and purity, sable represents wisdom, and gules signifies warrior fortitude.

The black wolves symbolize martial alertness, perseverance, and fierce loyalty, while the red border with golden saltires (St. Andrew's crosses) represents divine protection and heroic service in battle.

Surmounting the helmet, a plume of black and silver feathers rises from a golden coronet. Recorded in the Nobiliario Español.
