The origin of the name Avila
Avila is a historic Spanish surname of toponymic origin, deriving from the ancient walled city of Ávila in Old Castile. Originally designating knights and nobles who hailed from or defended the fortress city during the Reconquista, early family houses established prominent seats in Castile, Extremadura, and Andalusia, holding high administrative and military offices under Spanish royalty.
The symbolism of the Avila coat of arms
The Avila coat of arms features a vibrant azure (blue) shield charged with a striking gules (red) lion rampant. In classical heraldry, azure signifies truth, loyalty, and moral integrity, while gules represents warrior fortitude, magnanimity, and courage.
