The origin of the name Auer
Auer is a distinguished surname of German and Bavarian origin, deriving from the Middle High German word ouwe (meaning "meadow," "waterland," or "stream pasture"). Originally given to someone living near a lush river meadow, early family branches established manorial seats in Bavaria, Tyrol, and Austria, holding positions of civic leadership and judicial office.
The symbolism of the Auer coat of arms
The Auer coat of arms features an argent (silver) field charged with a bold gules (red) lion's head erased. In classical heraldry, argent signifies peace, sincerity, and moral integrity, while gules denotes warrior fortitude and magnanimity.
The red lion's head erased symbolizes fierce valor, noble spirit, and regal authority in defense of family honor.
Surmounting the shield, a plume of red and silver ostrich feathers rises from a golden coronet. Recorded in Siebmacher’s Wappenbuch and European heraldic archives.
