The origin of the name Arnold
Arnold is a historic surname of Germanic origin, derived from the ancient given name Arenvald (composed of arn, meaning "eagle," and wald, meaning "rule" or "power"). Introduced to Britain during the Norman Conquest of 1066, early branches established prominent seats in Monmouthshire, Gloucestershire, and Suffolk. Historical records document Roger Arnold in fifteenth-century Welsh heraldic rolls.
The symbolism of the Arnold coat of arms
The coat of arms displays a sable (black) shield crossed by a silver argent engrailed chevron, set between three silver dolphins naiant. In classical heraldry, sable signifies wisdom and constancy, while argent denotes peace and purity.
The engrailed chevron symbolizes protection and architectural defense, while the dolphins represent swift affection, salvation, and navigation.
Surmounting the helmet on a black and silver torse, the crest features a green dragon head erased. The motto scroll bears Ut vivas vigila ("Watch that you may live"). Cataloged in Burke’s General Armory.
