The origin of the name Armstrong

Armstrong is a famous surname of Scottish and English border origin, derived from a physical nickname denoting someone with great arm strength or prowess in combat. Legendary tradition attributes the name to Siward Digry ("Fairbairn"), the eleventh-century Earl of Northumberland, who rescued his king in battle. The Armstrongs became one of the most powerful and feared Border Reiver clans in Liddesdale and Cumberland.

The symbolism of the Armstrong coat of arms

The coat of arms features a gules (red) field charged with three dextral embowed arms in armor argent (silver) with clenched fists. In heraldry, gules denotes warrior magnanimity and fortitude, while argent signifies peace and purity.
