The origin of the name Anderson

The surname Anderson is a patronymic name of English and Scottish origin, translating literally to "the son of Andrew" (or "son of Anders"). It is derived from the ancient Greek personal name Andreas, which means "manly," "masculine," or "courageous." Due to Saint Andrew being the patron saint of Scotland, the first name became exceptionally prevalent throughout the British Isles following the early medieval period. The surname stabilized as a permanent hereditary designation between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, appearing in early official records such as the 1379 Poll Tax Returns of Yorkshire.

The symbolism of the Anderson coat of arms

The Shield Color: The silver or white background (argent) traditionally signifies peace, sincerity, and purity of purpose.

The Chevron: The central black structural band (sable) represents a roof-rafter or ridge-beam. In heraldic tradition, it symbolizes protection, architectural fortitude, and the successful completion of a significant defensive task or work of faithful service.

The Three Crosses Crosslet: Positioned two in chief and one in base, these crosses feature a crossbar on each arm. They are a classic medieval motif representing deep Christian faith, absolute devotion, and historical associations with the Crusades or holy service. The black coloration (sable) denotes wisdom and constancy.

The Crest: Situated above the shield on the crest is a hound, which traditionally signifies fidelity, protection and alertness.

Historical records and earliest evidence of the Anderson coat of arms

The Sixteenth-Century Jurisprudence Connection: This specific coat of arms is recorded in connection to Sir Edmund Anderson (1530–1605), a major English legal scholar who served as the Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas under Queen Elizabeth I. It also appears in Burke's General Armory under the family entries for Anderson of Penley, County Hertfordshire (where a Baronetcy was created in 1643) and Anderson of Eyeworth, County Bedfordshire—the official description recorded as "Argent, a chevron between three crosses crosslet sable."
