The origin of the name Alvarado
Alvarado is a noble Spanish surname of toponymic origin, deriving from the town of Alvarado in the province of Badajóz, Extremadura. The original root word stems from albar (meaning "white poplar tree"), designating an ancestral manor surrounded by poplar groves. The early knights of Alvarado established prominent seats during the medieval period and were recognized among the principal hidalgo families of Castile.
The symbolism of the Alvarado coat of arms
The Alvarado coat of arms features an or (gold) field charged with five azure (blue) fleur-de-lis set in saltire (2-1-2). In classical heraldry, or signifies intellect, elevation, and generosity, while azure denotes truth, loyalty, and moral integrity.
The five blue fleur-de-lis symbolize purity, nobility, and historical royal alliances, arranged in saltire to represent resolute defense and faith.
Surmounting the helmet on a gold and blue torse, a plume of blue and gold ostrich feathers rises from a golden coronet. Recorded in royal Spanish heraldic archives.
Historical figures
Pedro de Alvarado (c. 1485–1541): Spanish conquistador and Governor of Guatemala who played a major role in early sixteenth-century historical events.
Pedro de Alvarado y Velasco (17th century): Spanish military commander and knight of the Order of Santiago.
Tránsito Alvarado (19th century): Prominent Central American political figure and diplomat.
